A 12-year-old boy has died after sustaining an harm on a Gisborne beach final night time.
Police stated the boy suffered an harm in a “tragic accident” on Waikanae Beach and died a short while later.
Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz stated she is “absolutely devastated” by the information.
“I feel heartbroken for this whānau and can’t begin to understand their unimaginable loss. On behalf of the community and as the Mayor I send our sincere aroha to the whānau of this little boy. I will reach out to offer any support to the whānau that I can give.
“We perceive the loss of life has been referred to the coroner and we are going to cooperate absolutely with the coroner’s investigation.”
She added that the council will investigate after eye witnesses said they saw the boy playing on logs which had been washed into the water.
“We can even proceed our personal investigation into the origin of the woody particles and help requires an unbiased inquiry into future land use in Tairāwhiti. The state of our waterways is unacceptable.”
