After 5 many years and numerous hours of volunteer work collecting and recording the histories and tales of Church members and missionaries in New Zealand, Rangi and Vic Parker have been awarded a lifetime award throughout a ceremony held on the Matthew Cowley Pacific Church History Center on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2022.
Pacific Area Church history supervisor Melanie Riwai-Couch was emotional as she addressed an viewers of associates, household and associates and offered the award titled “Te Whatukura” and “Te Mareikura,” reported the Church’s Pacific Newsroom.
In Maori, “te whatukura” (male) and “te mareikura” (feminine) are revered associates and leaders whose presence and impression may be felt even when not bodily current.
The Parkers’ love for the history of the Church in Aotearoa — the Maori title for New Zealand — led them to gather and collect the journals, pictures, recordings and memorabilia of missionaries who served there. In doing so, they accrued a powerful history of their folks.

The Parkers donated all of it to the Church History Department, the place it has been digitized and cataloged and has been divided into 21 collections.
According to Riwai-Couch, the 21 collections are made up of three,130 parts, and “each component can contain many hundreds … of smaller parts,” equivalent to letters, recordings, artifacts and journals.
