Six years after Mike Mayers had his dismal debut in the big leagues

When he eventually had a second opportunity, he pitched five innings without allowing a run.

That one he could only enjoy for six days.

Tuesday night's 7-4 defeat to the New York Yankees ended the Angels' four-game winning streak after Mayers allowed seven runs in four innings.

Mayers allowed three home runs, including a gruelling three-run home bomb by Aaron Judge in the fourth inning, his MLB-leading 51st of the year.

When Mayers made his major league debut in 2016, he gave up nine runs in a start before switching to the bullpen.

Mayers didn't fare well against the Yankees, but he pitched well enough against the Rays to earn another chance.

Like we are paid to pitch, they are paid to hit, Mayers added. They performed better tonight than I did.
